Buddhism and Women April 11, 2013 Buddhism by Venerable K. Sri Dhammananda Maha Thera A female child may prove even to be a better offspring than a male. Women’s position in Buddhism is unique. The Buddha gave women full freedom to participate in a religious life. The Buddha was the first religious Teacher who gave this religious freedom to women. Before the Buddha, women’s duties had been restricted to the kitchen; women were not even allowed to enter any temple or to recite any religious scripture. During the Buddha’s time, women’s position in society was very low. The Buddha was criticized by the prevailing establishment when He gave this freedom to women. His move to allow women to enter the Holy Order was extremely radical for the times. Yet the Buddha allowed women to prove themselves and to show that they too had the capacity like men to attain the highest position in the religious way of life by attaining Arahantahood. Every woman in the world must be grateful to the Buddha for showing them the real religious way of living and for giving such freedom to them for the first time in world history. A good illustration of the prevailing attitude towards women during the Buddha’s time is found in these words of Mara: ‘No woman, with the two-finger wisdom (narrow) which is hers, could ever hope to reach those heights which are attained only by the sages.’ Undoubtedly, the Buddha was vehement in contradicting such attitude. The nun (bhikkhuni) to whom Mara addressed these words, gave the following reply: ‘When one’s mind is well concentrated and wisdom never fails, does the fact of being a woman make any difference?’ King Kosala was very disappointed when he heard that his Queen had given birth to a baby girl. He had expected a boy. To console the sad King, the Buddha said: ‘A female child, O Lord of men, may prove Even a better offspring than a male. For she may grow up wise and virtuous, Her husband’s mother reverencing, true wife, The boy that she may bear may do great deeds, And rule great realms, yes, such a son Of noble wife becomes his country’s guide,’ – (Samyutta Nikaya) The Buddha has confirmed that man is not always the only wise one; woman is also wise. Nowadays many religionists like to claim that their religions give women equal rights. We only have to look at the world around us today to see the position of women in many societies. It seems that they have no property rights, are discriminated in various fields and generally suffer abuse in many subtle forms. Even in western countries, women like the Suffragettes had to fight very hard for their rights. According to Buddhism, it is not justifiable to regard women as inferior. Mara, Lord of Death April 29, 2013 Buddhism By Barbara O’Brien Many supernatural creatures populate Buddhist literature, but among these Mara is unique. He is one of the earliest non-human beings to appear in Buddhist scriptures. He is a demon, sometimes called the Lord of Death, who plays a role in many stories of the Buddha and his monks. Mara is best known for his part in the historical Buddha’s enlightenment. This story came to be mythologized as a great battle with Mara, whose name means “destruction” and who represents the passions that snare and delude us. The Buddha’s Enlightenment There are several versions of this story; some fairly straightforward, some elaborate, some phantasmagorical. Here is a plain version: As the about-to-be Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama, sat in meditation, Mara brought his most beautiful daughters to seduce Siddhartha. Siddhartha,however, remained in meditation. Then Mara sent vast armies of monsters to attack him. Yet Siddhartha sat still and untouched. Mara claimed that the seat of enlightenment rightfully belonged to him and not to the mortal Siddhartha. Mara’s monstrous soldiers cried out together, “I am his witness!” Mara challenged Siddhartha, who will speak for you? Then Siddhartha reached out his right hand to touch the earth, and the earth itself spoke: “I bear you witness!” Mara disappeared. And as the morning star rose in the sky, Siddhartha Gautama realized enlightenment and became a Buddha. The Origins of Mara Mara may have had more than one precedent in pre-Buddhist mythology. For example, it’s possible he was based in part on some now-forgotten character from popular folklore. Zen teacher Lynn Jnana Sipe points out in “Reflections on Mara” that the notion of a mythological being responsible for evil and death is found in Vedic Brahmanic mythological traditions and also in non-Brahamanic traditions, such as that of the Jains. In other words, every religion in India seems to have had a character like Mara in its myths. Mara also appears to have been based on a drought demon of Vedic mythology named Namuci. The Rev. Jnana Sipe writes, “While Namuci initially appears in the Pali Canon as himself, he came to be transformed in early Buddhist texts to be the same as Mara, the god of death. In Buddhist demonology the figure of Namuci, with its associations of death-dealing hostility, as a result of drought, was taken up and used in order to build up the symbol of Mara; this is what the Evil One is like–he is Namuci, threatening the welfare of mankind. Mara threatens not by withholding the seasonal rains but by withholding or obscuring the knowledge of truth.” Mara in the Early Texts Ananda W.P. Guruge writes in “The Buddha’s Encounters with Mara the Tempter” that trying to put together a coherent narrative of Mara is close to impossible. “In his Dictionary of Paali Proper Names Professor G.P. Malalasekera introduces Maara as ‘the personification of Death, the Evil One, the Tempter (the Buddhist counterpart of the Devil or Principle of Destruction).’ He continues: ‘The legends concerning Maara are, in the books, very involved and defy any attempts at unraveling them.’” Guruge writes that Mara plays several different roles in the early texts, and sometimes seems to be several different characters. Sometimes he is the embodiment of death; sometimes he represents unskillful emotions or conditioned existence or temptation. Sometimes he is the son of a god. Is Mara the Buddhist Satan? Although there are some obvious parallels between Mara and the Devil or Satan of monotheistic religions, there are also many significant differences. Although both characters are associated with evil, it’s important to understand that Buddhists understand “evil” differently from how it is understood in most other religions. Please see “Buddhism and Evil” for more explanation. Also, Mara is a relatively minor figure in Buddhist mythology compared to Satan. Satan is the lord of Hell. Mara is the lord only of the sixth heaven of the “desire realm” of the Triloka, which is an allegorical representation of reality adapted from Hinduism. On the other hand, Jnana Sipe writes, “First, what is Mara’s domain? Where does he operate? At one point the Buddha indicated that each of the five skandhas, or the five aggregates, as well as the mind, mental states and mental consciousness are all declared to be Mara. Mara symbolizes the entire existence of unenlightened humanity. In other words, Mara’s realm is the whole of samsaric existence. Mara saturates every nook and cranny of life. Only in Nirvana is his influence unknown. Second, how does Mara operate? Herein lays the key to Mara’s influence over all unenlightened beings. The Pali Canon gives initial answers, not as alternatives, but as varying terms. First, Mara behaves like one of the demons of [then] popular thought. He uses deceptions, disguises, and threats, he possesses people, and he uses all kinds of horrible phenomena to terrify or cause confusion. Mara’s most effective weapon is sustaining a climate of fear, whether the fear be of drought or famine or cancer or terrorism. Identifying with a desire or fear tightens the knot that binds one to it, and, thereby, the sway it can have over one.” The Power of Myth Joseph Campbell’s retelling of the Buddha’s enlightenment story is different from any I’ve heard elsewhere, but I like it anyway. In Campbell’s version, Mara appeared as three different characters. The first was Kama, or Lust, and he brought with him his three daughters, named Desire, Fulfillment, and Regret. When Kama and his daughters failed to distract Siddhartha, Kama became Mara, Lord of Death, and he brought an army of demons. And when the army of demons failed to harm Siddhartha (they turned into flowers in his presence) Mara became Dharma, meaning (in Campbell’s context) “duty.” Young man, Dharma said, the events of the world require your attention. And at this point Siddhartha touched the earth, and the earth said, “This is my beloved son who has, through innumerable lifetimes, so given of himself, there is no body here.” An interesting retelling, I think. Who Is Mara to You? As in most Buddhist teachings, the point of Mara is not to “believe in” Mara but to understand what Mara represents in your own practice and experience of life. “Mara’s army is just as real to us today as it was to the Buddha,” Jnana Sipe said. “Mara stands for those patterns of behavior that long for the security of clinging to something real and permanent rather than facing the question posed by being a transient and contingent creature. ‘It makes no difference what you grasp’, said Buddha, ‘when someone grasps, Mara stands beside him.’ The tempestuous longings and fears that assail us, as well as the views and opinions that confine us are sufficient evidence of this. Lapis Lazuli was among the most highly prized tribute paid to Egypt, obtained from the oldest mines in the world, worked from around 4000 B.C. and still in use today. Referenced in the Old Testament as sapphire (unknown in that part of the ancient world), Lapis Lazuli is most likely the fifth stone in the original breastplate of the High Priest, as well as those of later times. [Kunz, 293-294] The golden sarcophagus of King Tutankhamen was richly inlaid with Lapis, as were other burial ornaments of Egyptian kings and queens. It was used extensively in scarabs, pendants and other jewelry, and ground into powder for dyes, eye shadow and medicinal elixirs. [Simmons, 227] In the dry, barren land of the Egyptians, this deep cobalt blue color was a spiritual contrast to their arid desert hues. The gold flecks were like stars in their night-time sky and by meditating on these colors they felt supernatural forces would transform their lives. The garments of priests and royalty were dyed with Lapis to indicate their status as gods themselves. [Raphaell, 141] In ancient Persia and pre-Columbian America, Lapis Lazuli was a symbol of the starry night, and a favorite stone of the Islamic Orient for protection from the evil eye. [Megemont, 110] Lapis was much used in Greek and Roman times as an ornamental stone, and in medieval Europe, Lapis Lazuli, resembling the blue of the heavens, was believed to counteract the wiles of the spirits of darkness and procure the aid and favor of the spirits of light and wisdom. Lapis Lazuli in Ancient Lore and Legend Lapis Lazuli was considered a cure for melancholy and for "quartern fever," an intermittent fever returning each third day, or fourth day counting in the previous attack. [Kunz, 93] It was also said to cure apoplexies, epilepsies, diseases of the spleen, and dementia. It was worn around the neck as an amulet to drive away frights from children, strengthened sight, prevented fainting and abortion if taken near the time of delivery. [Fernie, 330] Lapis Lazuli was used extensively in ancient Egypt and Assyria for amulets carved with various symbols, scarab seals, signets and cylinder seals. It was the material for the image of Truth (Ma), which the Egyptian chief-justice and High Priest wore around his neck suspended with a gold chain. [Kunz, 92-93, 119] The earliest recorded instances of semi-precious stones used for religious purposes comes from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, a ritual ceremony for safe passage and protection from evil for their deceased. Lapis Lazuli, named chesbet by the Egyptians, was used in many amulets to be placed on the body, including the tet, a mason's table symbol placed on the neck for protection, and the ab, heart, regarded as the seat of life and placed in its own receptacle. It could only be reunited with the body after being weighed in the balance of the underworld. Two special chapters were engraved on Lapis Lazuli, the 26th chapter referencing the heart, and the 140th chapter on the symbolic eye, made from Lapis and ornamented in gold. It was an amulet of great power, and an offering was to be made to this symbol to the supreme god Ra. [Kunz, 227, 229] In Assyrian texts, the uknu, Lapis Lazuli, was one of the seven gemstones placed in an ornament to be worn on the breast of the king as an amulet. Its power was so great it was believed to constitute an ornament for the gods as well. In the Gilgamesh epic of the Babylonians, legends tell of trees which grow precious stones, and Lapis Lazuli grows from its crown. Lapis Lazuli ornamented the yellow girdles worn by Chinese emperors of the Manchu dynasty for the services in the Temple of Heaven. [Kunz, 230, 232, 245] In Summerian mythology, the goddess Inanna (a forerunner of Aphrodite and Venus) journeyed into the underworld carrying Lapis Lazuli rods and measured time and the length of a person's life. It was believed crystals were the flesh of the gods and that the gods were crystal beings. [Hall 2, 14] One legend holds that King Solomon was given a special Lapis ring by an angel of the Lord that allowed him to control legions of demons which he used to build his temple. [Melody, 370] Ancient Egyptians believed the soul existed in the mind and was housed in the brain, and Lapis blue was a mental healer and soul purifier. Lapis was used to purge the soul of demonic possession by pulverizing the stone, mixing it with gold, making it into a poultice and placing it on the crown of the head. As it dried it would draw out the demons. In extreme cases, a small hole was drilled in the skull and the mixture was poured into the head. How To Use A Pendulum What is pendulum dowsing? A dowsing pendulum is an object suspended by a cord, used for obtaining information which the normal senses are unable to access on a conscious level. You could improvise with an everyday object, such as a pendant, a chain, a plumb bob or a ring on a thread. However, a purpose made pendulum is best because it has a shape and geometry, that is, a symmetry. This allows the swing to be more even and, more sensitive and therefore more effective. The pendulum, as an extension of the person using it, may be influenced both consciously and subconsciously making the responses accurate as well as inaccurate. Wishful thinking or a preconceived outcome, however slight, can be magnified making the use of the pendulum in that instance ineffective. The user must take steps to prevent this. Insufficiently specific questioning can result in senseless responses. THOUGHT - Is wishful thinking constructive or destructive? THOUGHT - An experience is a reality. TRUE or FALSE? What is a pendulum for? A dowsing pendulum is a tool used for obtaining information from beyond normal consciousness. It helps to tap into the Higher Self and enhance intuition. There are various theories about how and why the pendulum works, and why better for some than others. There is no magic involved. Dowsing utilises the natural process of tuning-in to the Higher Self. When we are too engrossed in everyday life and materialistic worries, our powers of intuition diminish. The intuition we had as children diminishes with age in most of us as a result of ‘modern living’ and negative programming. We forget who we are. We lose the ability to listen to the Higher Self. There are different techniques to reconnect with the Higher Self, and using the pendulum is one of these. As you become more proficient or adept, the intuition becomes so strong that you begin to know. To increase awareness and raise the consciousness is to make that connection to the Higher Self. The pendulum can be used in healing, energy balancing, detecting imbalances in energy fields, finding missing objects and other uses. THOUGHT - Healing can take place when a shift in consciousness occurs in the recipient, which is also accompanied by a shift in consciousness in the practitioner. THOUGHT - Remember the memory. Does it matter what the pendulum is made from? Yes, and to some extent no. It also depends on the person using the pendulum as well as the purpose, or intention of the dowser. To obtain a simple yes or no response, it should not matter. On the one hand it is the mental state of the dowser that can influence the pendulum and so the result. On the other hand it can be the material composition of the pendulum and the design, which can influence the result. This property, the shape, form, design can be used to advantage in analytical dowsing as well as in healing. This is where energy pendulums become special pendulums for more specific functions. THOUGHT - What is the colour and pattern of your wallpaper or carpet. What does it do to your living environment? THOUGHT - What effect does a pattern have on me or someone else? What is an energy pendulum? An energy pendulum is basically an energy device on a cord, and is used in a specified manner as a pendulum. It is popularly called a radionic pendulum. [RADIONICS: The word radionics has been used in different contexts and generally relates to healing at a distance using instruments. In some parts of the world it is described as psionics. Whichever word is used to describe it, the mental input of the user is required. Traditionally a black-box type of instrument is used in medical radionics. Over more recent years the term radionics has been used in other forms of energy dowsing and also attributed to some pendulums. The term radiesthetic pendulum may well describe energy pendulums also. If however, the device has the ability to be reset as with a dial or equivalent, or recharging or charging, as for example in the case of the Mermet pendulum and Isis pendulum then it can fall into the broad term of a radionic pendulum. The Universal Pendulum is one such device, which combines the 'black box' principles with a pendulum] Energy pendulums are constructed by observing the principle of the natural radiation of matter and geometric form. Geometry, and symmetry can be seen in the design of an energy pendulum as a whole, as well as in the structure of the materials used such as crystals and minerals. A pendulum with a cavity may also be given a geometry or design through the make-up of the sample placed within it. Homoeopaths utilise this principle to great advantage in not only determining the specific potency for an individual, but also in transmitting (broadcasting) it. The techniques in using energy pendulums are different to those techniques in using the more general pendulums. THOUGHT - What properties does the pendulum have? THOUGHT - Energy follows thought. Most people have at one time or another, without knowing it, done some form of radionics. Anyone can do it with the right approach and some practice. If you have ever thought of an activity, such as a sporting event, a job interview, a date or a holiday, how do you think the final result happened? By chance? No, you made it happen by preparation and going through with it. Or not, whatever the case may be. There was a thoughtform to start with. Positive or negative or even neutral. Did you write something down or make a plan? Did you imagine or visualise the end result? Your self-talk did the rest. Did you put a ‘hex’ on someone? Were you positive or negative? Why? Did the final result enhance your existence or that of someone else? Now we take it a step further and use the mind positively to reach a goal. How? That takes energy and some search for answers. This 'How To' guide is a brief introduction to pendulums and dowsing, allowing a beginner to get some insights into basic pendulum use and to be able to make a choice of a suitable pendulum. There are many methods and personal preferences as well as theories and explanations. You can make up your own mind by research and experience. How to use a pendulum? 1) The yes/no technique 2) Chart and map dowsing techniques 3) Energy dowsing i) Analysis ii) Treatment 1) The yes/no technique is most common in pendulum dowsing and may be achieved in several ways. See examples (a) and (b). Example (a) Very simplistically, these are some of the motions which a pendulum could trace and can be seen to be as follows. Whilst these look obvious, the descriptions are written below A. Clockwise or circular right B. Counter-clockwise or circular left C. Diagonally left D. Side to side E. Diagonally right F. Back and forth Hold a pendulum cord between thumb and forefinger about three to four inches above the pendulum and let it hang more or less motionless. Ask a question mentally for a reaction to the answer 'yes'. Wait a few seconds for a reaction, which could be one of the motions described above. Again, let the pendulum hang and mentally ask for a reaction to the answer for 'no'. The pendulum should move but in another manner or direction. The fingers and arm should not be held rigidly, and any small arm or finger movements should be allowed so that the pendulum will move! Some people have a very noticeable twitch or spasm in the arm, sending the pendulum into motion immediately. The idea is for any movement to be unconscious and not directly influenced by wishful thinking. Various reactions will be obtained by different people, male or female, as well as left or right handed, and you should be able to establish your own convention. For example, some people find A to be yes and B to be no or vice versa. Others find yes to be C and no to be E, or vice versa. Any combination of these examples can do. You will find your own natural preferences, which may be best for you as, after all, it is the accuracy of results that count. For those using a pendulum for the first time, don't worry if you do not get a consistent reaction or no reaction at all. A little practice will find results, but don't force it. There are programming techniques also, but for the beginner who doesn't seem to be able to get started, it could be that some de-programming may be called for! That is, allow it to happen without fear or prejudice. Look at it this way. If you are hungry, you know it and you know your body is telling you something, and there is nothing supernatural about it. The same with the pendulum, it is purely a matter of perception and a hunger or need for information. Example (b) Draw a semi-circle of about three inches radius and divide it into two segments by drawing a vertical line and a horizontal line through the centre. Inside the left segment write the word "no" and the minus sign (-), and inside the right segment write the word "yes" and the plus sign (+). Hold the pendulum above the centre resting the elbow on the table if you feel more comfortable that way. Propping up the elbow does not mean that the pendulum will remain still, it depends on the arm being firmly relaxed, not tensed. Ask the pendulum to swing in the direction of "yes" and give it a start in the forward direction if you have to. Do the same for "no". This method has the effect of programming the pendulum/you to accept the layout as described. Similar methods are taught by various dowsers and again it is best to do what is comfortable and feels right. A certain amount of intellectualism will happen with any method used but once the mind accepts the intent then the programming is complete and work can go ahead. Glance away briefly if it doesn't move as sometimes staring at the pendulum keeps it in one place. It is like riding a bicycle, once you move and get the feel of it, you just know and do it automatically. Have fun but avoid trivia! We do not advocate the pendulum taking over your life, but use it wisely as a tool for learning and transformation.More on that at a later date. The vertical line can be used to be programmed for "neutral", waiting for an answer if one prefers to start with the pendulum swinging, as it will then "kick" over to the right or to the left. The horizontal line can be used to program the "don't know" response. Chart dowsing uses this type of technique to good advantage. You just change into whatever mode is suited for the work at hand with a suitable pendulum. THOUGHT - Life is to experience. Choosing a pendulum The methods of choosing a pendulum are varied and there is a simple rule of thumb to observe. That is - whatever works for you is the best for you - as, after all, it is results that count. Having said that, for some forms of energy dowsing one would require a pendulum which is made of a particular material, in a specific shape or form, and well balanced for a smooth action. Choose a basic or general dowsing pendulum for general dowsing, e.g. yes and no questioning. This could be a conical or rounded pendulum. Both are precision made to have a good feel in use and have pointed ends to enable them to be used also for dowsing over charts and for map dowsing. These are made of brass, a material which is more neutral than say, wood, glass or crystal. (A crystal pendulum is in effect another energy device and will resonate ... according to the structure ... which can get in the way, or affect some forms of dowsing) Energy dowsing can take the form of colour therapy and chakra balancing with a view to healing on various levels. Choose the Isis pendulum which is also good for beginners. The Isis pendulum generates white and all colours in the white light spectrum. It is self-cleansing by virtue of the white light emanations. The Karnak pendulum is excellent for tuning in to mental questioning and analysing. The Osiris pendulum should be used with caution, and certainly not by those unfamiliar with the strong energies it can emit. It is not intended as a beginner's pendulum but for experienced healers and therapists. Analysing energy fields can be done with any pendulum if the right questions are formulated, but with energy pendulums there is no questioning as such, but rather statements. Responses are various and the answer is within the total response cycle. (The responses of the pendulum are effectively the treatments as well, but more about that later). The Universal Pendulum (U.P.) is most efficient and effective for this type of dowsing and healing. It is very easy to learn to use the U.P. and those new to pendulums find it surprisingly accurate. This is because they have no preconceived attitude towards how a pendulum works or should work. Experienced therapists in other fields of healing have put the U.P. to great use. There is a video cassette to assist those unable to attend a workshop.The Mermet pendulum has also proved to be a most effective tool for homoeopaths since the cavity within the pendulum can be used for transmitting remedies of any potency. Note. There is no doubt that some precautionary measures are needed to prevent the drain of energy at the expense of the dowser, for instance in healing and water divining. It was worn around the neck as an amulet to drive away frights from children, strengthened sight, prevented fainting and abortion if taken near the time of delivery. [Fernie, 330] Lapis Lazuli was used extensively in ancient Egypt and Assyria for amulets carved with various symbols, scarab seals, signets and cylinder seals. It was the material for the image of Truth (Ma), which the Egyptian chief-justice and High Priest wore around his neck suspended with a gold chain. [Kunz, 92-93, 119] The earliest recorded instances of semi-precious stones used for religious purposes comes from the Egyptian Book of the Dead, a ritual ceremony for safe passage and protection from evil for their deceased. Lapis Lazuli, named chesbet by the Egyptians, was used in many amulets to be placed on the body, including the tet, a mason's table symbol placed on the neck for protection, and the ab, heart, regarded as the seat of life and placed in its own receptacle. It could only be reunited with the body after being weighed in the balance of the underworld. Two special chapters were engraved on Lapis Lazuli, the 26th chapter referencing the heart, and the 140th chapter on the symbolic eye, made from Lapis and ornamented in gold. It was an amulet of great power, and an offering was to be made to this symbol to the supreme god Ra. [Kunz, 227, 229] In Assyrian texts, the uknu, Lapis Lazuli, was one of the seven gemstones placed in an ornament to be worn on the breast of the king as an amulet. Its power was so great it was believed to constitute an ornament for the gods as well. In the Gilgamesh epic of the Babylonians, legends tell of trees which grow precious stones, and Lapis Lazuli grows from its crown. Lapis Lazuli ornamented the yellow girdles worn by Chinese emperors of the Manchu dynasty for the services in the Temple of Heaven. [Kunz, 230, 232, 245] In Summerian mythology, the goddess Inanna (a forerunner of Aphrodite and Venus) journeyed into the underworld carrying Lapis Lazuli rods and measured time and the length of a person's life. It was believed crystals were the flesh of the gods and that the gods were crystal beings. [Hall 2, 14] One legend holds that King Solomon was given a special Lapis ring by an angel of the Lord that allowed him to control legions of demons which he used to build his temple. [Melody, 370] Ancient Egyptians believed the soul existed in the mind and was housed in the brain, and Lapis blue was a mental healer and soul purifier. Lapis was used to purge the soul of demonic possession by pulverizing the stone, mixing it with gold, making it into a poultice and placing it on the crown of the head. As it dried it would draw out the demons. In extreme cases, a small hole was drilled in the skull and the mixture was poured into the head. World's first GM babies born WEDNESDAY, JULY 3, 2013 by MICHAEL HANLON, Daily Mail The world's first genetically modified humans have been created, it was revealed last night. The disclosure that 30 healthy babies were born after a series of experiments in the United States provoked another furious debate about ethics. So far, two of the babies have been tested and have been found to contain genes from three 'parents'. Fifteen of the children were born in the past three years as a result of one experimental programme at the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science of St Barnabas in New Jersey. The babies were born to women who had problems conceiving. Extra genes from a female donor were inserted into their eggs before they were fertilised in an attempt to enable them to conceive. Genetic fingerprint tests on two one-year- old children confirm that they have inherited DNA from three adults --two women and one man. The fact that the children have inherited the extra genes and incorporated them into their 'germline' means that they will, in turn, be able to pass them on to their own offspring. Altering the human germline - in effect tinkering with the very make-up of our species - is a technique shunned by the vast majority of the world's scientists. Geneticists fear that one day this method could be used to create new races of humans with extra, desired characteristics such as strength or high intelligence. Writing in the journal Human Reproduction, the researchers, led by fertility pioneer Professor Jacques Cohen, say that this 'is the first case of human germline genetic modification resulting in normal healthy children'. Some experts severely criticised the experiments. Lord Winston, of the Hammersmith Hospital in West London, told the BBC yesterday: 'Regarding the treat-ment of the infertile, there is no evidence that this technique is worth doing . . . I am very surprised that it was even carried out at this stage. It would certainly not be allowed in Britain.' John Smeaton, national director of the Society for the Protection of Unborn Children, said: 'One has tremendous sympathy for couples who suffer infertility problems. But this seems to be a further illustration of the fact that the whole process of in vitro fertilisation as a means of conceiving babies leads to babies being regarded as objects on a production line. 'It is a further and very worrying step down the wrong road for humanity.' Professor Cohen and his colleagues diagnosed that the women were infertile because they had defects in tiny structures in their egg cells, called mitochondria. They took eggs from donors and, using a fine needle, sucked some of the internal material - containing 'healthy' mitochondria - and injected it into eggs from the women wanting to conceive. Because mitochondria contain genes, the babies resulting from the treatment have inherited DNA from both women. These genes can now be passed down the germline along the maternal line. A spokesman for the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA), which regulates 'assisted reproduction' technology in Britain, said that it would not license the technique here because it involved altering the germline. Jacques Cohen is regarded as a brilliant but controversial scientist who has pushed the boundaries of assisted reproduction technologies. He developed a technique which allows infertile men to have their own children, by injecting sperm DNA straight into the egg in the lab. Prior to this, only infertile women were able to conceive using IVF. Last year, Professor Cohen said that his expertise would allow him to clone children --a prospect treated with horror by the mainstream scientific community. 'It would be an afternoon's work for one of my students,' he said, adding that he had been approached by 'at least three' individuals wishing to create a cloned child, but had turned down their requests.
