Our thoughts create our reality, and by regularly practicing positive chakra balancing affirmations, we can achieve astonishing results in our lives. Chakra is a Sanskrit word which literally translates into a spinning wheel. According to ancient yogic traditions, there are seven major chakras or energy centers in our body. Each of these chakras corresponds to a particular color-coded vibrational frequency in the universe which influences our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. When our chakras are perfectly aligned with the universal flow of energy, every aspect of our life becomes harmonious and joyful. We reclaim perfect health, and our love and passion for life becomes renewed. When using the following affirmations, sit or lie down in a quiet place and focus on the location of each chakra. As you speak out or silently meditate on each affirmation, visualize a wheel spinning face-up in a clockwise direction in the specific color frequency of each chakra: 1. Root Chakra – The root chakra is located at the base of our spine and corresponds to the color red. This chakra relates to our basic human instinct for survival, security and stability. Affirmation: “I am a divine being of light, and I am peaceful, protected and secure” 2. Sacral Chakra – The sacral chakra is located just below our navel in our lower abdominal region. The color of this chakra is a deep, saturated orange and relates to reproduction on a physical level, creativity and joy and relationships on an emotional level and our energy and passions on a spiritual level. Affirmation: “I am radiant, beautiful and strong and enjoy a healthy and passionate life” 3. Solar Plexus Chakra – This chakra is located above our navel and directly in our stomach area. The solar plexus chakra therefore plays a vital role in digestion and glows in a bright yellow color. This chakra deals with growth and pertains to issues of the intellect, personal power, control and spiritual evolution. Affirmation: “I am positively empowered and successful in all my ventures” 4. Heart Chakra – The heart chakra is located in the centre of the chest and spins with the vibrant green color of spring. This chakra is one of the most important meditation tools for cleansing and clearing spiritual imbalances. The key issues related to the heart chakra are unconditional love, compassion and wellbeing. Affirmation: “Love is the answer to everything in life, and I give and receive love effortlessly and unconditionally” 5. Throat Chakra – This chakra is centered in our throat and exudes a pale blue light. The throat chakra governs our ability to express and communicate clear thoughts and ideas. It is also related to truth, maturity, independence and the ability to trust others. Affirmation: “My thoughts are positive, and I always express myself truthfully and clearly” 6. Third Eye Chakra – The third eye chakra is positioned in the center of our forehead, between our eyebrows. Also known as the brow chakra, it spins in a deep saturated dark blue hue and helps us tap into our inner guidance and divine vision. This chakra deals with developing intuitive clarity, releasing repressed emotions and attaining self realization. Affirmation: “I am tuned into the divine universal wisdom and always understand the true meaning of life situations” 7. Crown Chakra – The crown chakra is located at the top of our head or in the crown area and corresponds to the violet color. The role of this chakra is based in awakening consciousness and attaining enlightenment through the integration of the self into the one universal form of intelligence. Affirmation: “I am complete and one with the divine energy” Chakra balancing affirmations can create extraordinary revolutions in our spiritual healing journey. There can be nothing more effective and transformative than using your very own power of thought to bring positive changes in your body, mind and soul. 3.8k Like 288 Tweet 2.6k Pin it 198 +1 4 Stumble 34 Email 32 CommentsTags:affirmationschakrashealingmind body connectionmindfulnessspiritualitywellnessyogaAbout the Author Sohini Trehan Sohini is an ex climatologist from India who gave up her successful research career to devote herself completely to the study and teaching of traditional yogic sciences. Combining crystals and candles can enhance energy work, and increase the vibrations being sent forth. Candles work with the power of stones to manifest goals and bring intentions to fruition. Before starting any work with candles or crystals, I like to clean them of any negative energy they may have collected. You can Reiki them, run them under cold water, put them in moonlight, or pass them through incense. Once the candles are clean and dry (when using water let them dry for a day or two away from direct sunlight) they will be ready for use. The following is a list of goals, and how you can use candles with crystals to create the reality you desire. Success: Take an Unscented Soy Wax Candle and lightly coat it in a clockwise fashion with cinnamon oil. As you go around the Soy Wax Candle with the oil think of your intention. Feel it in your body. If you don’t have cinnamon oil, spread powdered cinnamon on the bottom of the candle holder. Infuse eight crystals consisting of Carnelian, Citrine, and Amber with your goal. On a sunny Sunday morning light the candle (where the sunshine can hit it) and place the crystals around the candle in a circular fashion. As you do this focus on the success you wish to have. If possible let the candle stay lit for an hour or more. Continue doing this all week or until your candle burns out. Afterwards, take the crystals and place them in your pocket to continue carrying the energy of the crystals and your intention with you. Abundance: One of the best ways to work towards increasing abundance is to create a grid. The best day for abundance energy is Thursday, particularly during a new moon. Use aJasmine Soy Wax Candle as the center of this grid. Before establishing the grid, hold the candle in your hands and infuse it with your intention. Gather Citrine and Clear Quartz tumbled stones, and imagine filling them with your goals and dreams. Then place the Citrine crystals around the candle holder with the Clear Quartz an inch away from the Citrine, surrounding them in circular pattern. Light the Soy Wax Candle and imagine the flame spreading out and filling each crystal. As the fire expands through the crystal, picture it moving beyond the space into the world, carrying your intention out to the universe. Do this for approximately 5-20 minutes every day for a week. Grounding: Light a Sandalwood Soy Wax Candle. Place a piece of Tree Agate in each hand and inhale the candle's scent. With each breath in, imagine the veins (lines in your crystal), going through your arms. At the torso they extend down. With each breath imagine them being pushed further into the earth. Continue doing this until you feel the lines pushing through your feet into the ground, reaching the hot core of the planet. Once you have reached the core, feel that Tree Agate's veins (lines) have become your roots – and as you inhale, you are now pulling earth energy up to your body. The energy shoots up through your roots into your body and you feel firmly planted in the earth. You are breathing in deep green energy, and your body feels alive and strong. This flow of earth energy should continue for at least 5 minutes. Once you feel well and balanced you can start slowly moving your hands, feet, and body. You should feel grounded and balanced. Stress Reducer: A wonderful way to relax is to light a scented Lavender Soy Wax Candle when you take a bath or shower. Place some Amethyst crystals in your bath water. If you can add a drop or two of Lavender-scented oil, that would also help. Soak in the water for 5-10 minutes and let the fragrance seep into your body. If you don’t have time for a bath, place your soap on a large piece of Amethyst or surround your dry soap with Amethyst and Lepidolite crystals for up to 20 minutes. Let their energy flow into the soap and imagine it washing away the stress as you shower or bathe. Love: Most people think that love has to be romantic in nature; but what about loving yourself? To do this you will need a Rose Soy Wax Candle and Rose Quartz Crystals. On a Friday night take some time to yourself and light the candle. Sit quietly and hold the Rose Quartz in your dominant hand over your heart chakra. While quietly sitting and breathing, imagine pink light going into your heart chakra from the crystal. Imagine the light spreading from that energy center through your whole self, forming a bubble around your body. The pink light infuses your body with love and compassion. Breathe in the pink light, and as you breathe out imagine all the unwanted emotions, feelings, and energies harbored within in your body leaving. As the breath leaves the body it becomes transmuted into pink sparkles that float around your aura. Do this for five minutes. Once you are done, imagine a pink root going from your body into the earth. Thank the crystal for its help and let it recharge for the next couple of days. Health: When you come down with a cold or flu and need to get better as soon as possible, using candles and crystals may help give you the edge over your illness. The first thing to do is to light a Eucalyptus Soy Wax Candle. This scent has anti-viral properties which will start working its way through your nasal and sinus cavities. The next step is to use Carnelian to boost your immune system. If you have time to rest, place the Carnelian on your Thymus gland (approx. 2-3 inches above your heart chakra). If not, wear a pendant, necklace, or earrings that contain Carnelian to keep increasing the energetic flow to improve your resistance. At night place an Amethyst under your pillow to aid in improving your vibrational health. Psychic Abilities: Opening and increasing psychic abilities is something many of us strive for. An easy way to do this is to concentrate on relaxing – which is something most of us don’t do. To start, light a Vanilla Soy Wax Candle. Holding a Lapis Lazuli, Amethyst, or Iolite in one or both hands would be helpful. Just look at the flame and breathe, focusing on the Vanilla scent. As you watch the fire flicker, feel the flame as limber energy flowing through you. If a thought comes into your mind that is fine, let it go, and continue to breathe. Initially, do this 5 minutes a day and work up to 15 minutes (time permitting). After learning how to relax, ask yourself one question that you would like to receive guidance on during the session. Depending on how stressed you are, it may take as short as a week, to as long as a month to start noticing that you are receiving information. Don’t force this process, it will come in its own time. The goal of this exercise is to let you relax enough to let information in. The information we seek is usually within us, but we are too tied up in knots to recognize it. By unwinding we are able to receive the guidance inside of us. Joy: Neroli Soy Wax Candles, along with Sunstones, can help cultivate more of this delightful emotion in your life. When using Neroli for joy, using an orange-colored candle holder will increase the energetic output of your goal. Carving a picture of the sun into your candle while feeling joy will infuse the candle with your intention. You can carve the candle with a long pin, nail, or even a pumpkin carver. Once this is done, place the candle in the candle holder. Collect four Sunstones and four terminated Clear Quartz Points. Infuse them with the intention to bring more joy into your life. Place the Sunstones in a North, South, East, and Westerly direction, next to your candle holder. Place the terminated points half-an-inch from the Sunstone in the same directions. Imagine the scent of the candles traveling through the candle into the Sunstones and out to the terminated points where they then travel out of your space into the world. You are now broadcasting your intention to bring more joy into your life. Sit back, breathe in the scent, and let the energy flow. Leave the candle burning for approximately 20 minutes a day. Every day when you light the candle envision a sense of joy enveloping you. Restful Sleep: We all need good sleep, and Chamomile and Amber Soy Wax Candles can help us. Light a Chamomile or Amber Soy Wax Candle, breathing in the scent and focusing on relaxing the body. Take 5-10 minutes to unwind from your day. Have Blue Lace Agate and Blue Calcite in your pockets, or if that is not convenient place them next to your candle. About an hour before you go to sleep, drink some Chamomile tea. While you sip your tea, imagine relaxation flowing down your throat into your torso and limbs. Once you finish the tea, place the candle in the room where you will sleep. Before going to bed snuff the candle out and the let the scent take you back to the few minutes of relaxation you had after lighting the candle and drinking the tea. Bibliography Dugan, Ellen. http://www.crystalinks.com/candles2.html @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ Simple Guidelines For Candle Burning The Subconsciousness and Belief by Deja Allison (2006) The psychological basis of most ritual performance is the connection to the emotional body. The subconscious mind can not and does not distinguish between 'actually is' and 'what it thinks is'. It makes no judgment. It does not discern or weigh evidence. It accepts all input like a filtering house for all data. It will file, categorize, and label experiences from all 5 senses. It will be altered to any danger, or anything that has left an impression on or pattern from a previous experience. To the subconscious EVERYTHING is real. This is the seat of phobias, fears and where habits form, but it is also the place of love, compassion and hope. If you want to ever change an old pattern of behavior, the subconscious is the area you must appeal. There is where change is formed and made. The hints, nudges and 'intuition' you feel is the direct communication from your subconscious. Do not confuse this with psychic energy, though, closely related and somewhat similar, it is not quite the same. The feeling of DŽjˆ vu can sometimes be an association that surface when we are doing an activity and the subconscious already has a file on similar activity. It feels as if we have done it before because our subconscious mind feels a kinship of familiarity with a present activity. However, DŽjˆ vu can come from deeper levels, like precognitive dreams, or the super consciousness. When we desire something we create a strong attachment and connection to the thing we desire, whether it is a healing, an object, a mate, a job, etc.. When we do this we build an energy 'bridge' between the thing desired and the ourselves. This strong emotional connection is one of the components as to why candle burning can actually work. The energy force of the mind is a powerful tool. Usually, if we move something through the subconscious it will have a more lasting effect that if we do it in just the conscious mind. When we use the conscious mind it is much as if remembering a phone number that we know we will not use again, we use it then quickly dismiss it. Using the subconscious is more like remember something by association. There is a chain or collection of "tagged" associations. i.e.: How I remember 'Rorschach ink blot personality test' is by thinking it as a , 'Roar+Shack'. I picture a shack animated roaring like a lion. Hey, it works! Okay? See, there is some sort of an association. The Shapes and Colors of Things The shapes of candles plays an important role in the configuration of energy. As with most objects the visual aspects of them, will conduct energy along certain lines. Shape gauges the energy structure. The color and the scent, if scented ones are used, have an effect on us, which in turn will also effect the channeling of the energy. All of these components are like an orchestra, each contributing their part. We are the conductors of that energy, using the tools of shapes, color, scent and sound. Take care to use scented candles or any sounds as they can be more distracting than helpful. I do not recommend using 'novelty' or 'decorative' shapes as mostly they are a detraction to the serious candle officiate . If you have an absolutely must shape, like a butterfly or winged heart, or a particular scent, that you absolutely love. Then, maybe, but only because of the emotional connection one would have to it. Emotions are very powerful entities in Candle Burning.. This type of ceremonial participation bears a strong connection to the subconscious mind. Color is important to the practice of candle burning for two reasons. One, the color chosen is a particular frequency. It will contribute to the pool of energies as a whole package. Along with shape it helps signature the vbs. (vibrations per second) of the resonating value. Combining these with the force of your emotional attachment they become a potent catalyst for manifestation. Doesn't everything we want begin with our thinking of it first? Yes, so what we think is a valuable component to the manifestation. Simple Guidelines For Candle Burning 1. The color of the candle is the frequency you will amplify and release. 2. The color of candle you choose is determined by what is needed. 3. Candles should be 'dressed' and cleansed before each use. This rids the candle of any accumulated negativity. I recommend rubbing them with an all cotton, white color, flannel fabric. Rub them in one direction only, as not to build any static charge that could affect the energy flow. After you cleanse them hold the candle and state a simple affirmation over them as a 'blessing' of the candle. 4. Never mix use candles. i.e.: If a candle as been used for healing never use it for anything else. This remains true for all uses. Do mix use will conflict the energy and weaken or disrupt the clear frequency. 5. This is THE GOLDEN RULE of candle burning. Never use candle burning to inflict pain, discomfort or to manipulate another person's Free Will. To do so will create some very negative karma for the one who does it. In candle burning one produces ten---which means whatever you put out to someone else comes back 10 times on you. As an added note of information for those who may not be familiar with. The Law of Manipulation. One should not pray, excite or execute any motion of thought or action directly 'to' or 'for' another without their explicit acceptance. Nor should one do absent healing or any for of energy implementation toward another without their avowal. It is allowed and not a Free Will breach to generally pray, excite or excite energy implementation for or toward another. i.e.: 'I pray for the uplifting of all souls.' 'May those who are in need find assistance and safety.' These examples DO NOT breach the laws governing Manipulation. 6. Never use the breath to extinguish a candle flame. To do so affects the frequency of the ending part of the candle burning session. The breath is an energy affecting force and is use in other forms of healing. The two creative forces of 'breath' and 'flame' can conflict the creative forces and desired effects instead use a metal cup or flame snuffer made for this purpose The Triangle The triangle is a symbol of manifestation. It will amplify anything put into it. Triangles to have an effect on anything inside them. In the 1970's triangle shapes were used to preserve milk and other food without refrigeration. I do not recommend anyone doing that as the technology is more complicated than I am explaining here and one might get ill if they try that, but commercially it was done. I know with my own experiments with pyramid shapes, I mummified meat in 3 days with just a simple, basic pyramid. My grandfathers' razor blades (before the days of Bic throwaways) lasted for one year when stored in a pyramid. As you can see the triangle is amplifies the energy in a unique way. The three is symbolic of multiplicity, creative power, growth and the forward movement overcoming duality. In the Tao three is the central number of equilibrium. The Square The 4 cornered box shape is an important shape to any foundation. Its metaphysical meaning has long been understood as a stabilizing force. It grounds and focuses the physiological system. It is the root of all. Four is the spatial configuration of order. It is wholeness and totality. It represents the solid upon the earth plane. It is representative of the 4 elements of, fire, air, water, earth. In Buddhist philosophy the four limbs and from it's roots come forth the four noble emotions of, compassion, affection, love, fairness (non judgment). The Circle It is the ultimate is protection. Circles represent the cycle of birth and rebirth. The circle is symbolic of all cycles in nature. Birth, growth, Transition and Rebirth. It is seen as Number One, the Prime. The Godhead, and Source of All. It is the IS and Ever Will BE. Nothing can penetrate a sealed circle. Whatever is placed inside is protect from outside and whatever is inside can not get out. The circle is unlimited. In some cultures it symbolizes the Void of which spoke Buddha. Whatever color candle one decides to burn in the circle it will bring exact measure. Know carefully what you ask forth, for ye shall surely receive. Candle Cross This configuration affects all four elements of earth, fire, water, air. The cross brings in the perfect balance of feminine and masculine energy. Therefore it touches all aspects of the human form. It links to the heart as center. It is the one configuration that will absorb any color candle used. The number four is, again, important as a key registration to the energy field it creates. i.e.: see: The Square. Whatever you burn the candle for , think of it as being the 'correct' balances of matter. The Diamond The Diamond Do Not Use This Layout Unless You Are A Seasoned Energy Worker. God's Divine Trowel. The building block of Universe from which all things come forth. It is the DNA blueprint of the primal force upon which all is built. It brings forth all things. To burn candles in this configuration is to summon all energies, though not necessarily in balance,. This configuration is not for the novice or neophyte. This is for used by masters and those who know and understand energy. Only those who work with energy, like healers, Reiki Masters, etc. should attempt candle burning in this arrangement. This layout is for use when one wants to create 'new' forms and applications. This is for those who understand and know how to work with energies in their raw and natural state. The Star as a Symbol It is the foremost symbol of divine, celestial presentation The star symbolizes the highest attainment in the heavens. Star shine amongst the noble gases and carbon compounds of space. They are energy manifest, raw, potential and concrete. Stars have strong religious connotation. Stars guide, we even wish on stars. 5 Pointed Star They are symbolic of high aspiration, education and spiritual practices. The pentagram is significant in magic, witchcraft and certain practices in the older arcane studies. In some practices it is used upside down, but that is considered by most history to be a very negative use of the pentagram forces. The five points are representative of the human body. Head, two out stretched arms, the trunk of the body, two legs slightly apart. The five is quincunx , the center, the meeting point of the heavens and earth. It is the four cardinal points with the center. It represents God as Source. and the four greatest forces. It is strength, versatility Five represents the 'Light'. I find all this very interesting when I apply the five configurations and meanings to the Crop Circle that I was drawn to a few weeks back. I did extensive 3 D models and the geometry was revealing. No matter which way I configured the intricate angles they always came out to the representation and depiction of ancient meanings of the Godhead, The Source and the creation and manifestation of Light upon the Earth plane 3 dimensional time frame. Taken in context to the other symbols found like my name, repeated numerous times, and the yin and yang and many wonder other symbols that where found there, it told a beautiful story of my own spiritual path and beliefs. When this layout is used in candle burning it moves the energy in a way to strengthen. It fortifies all within the assigned area. It creates a higher spiritual field. Visions are a possible manifestation within this field of energy. 6 Pointed Star The Seal of Solomon. The abstract of creation. The two intersecting triangles represent the duality of masculine and feminine energies. The elements of fire and water combined. The are the depiction of "as above, so below" as well known in metaphysical edicts. Six is equilibrium and harmony. In most cultures it is seen as the 'perfect' number. In ancient arcane studies the six is human manifestation upon the earth plane. The two intersecting triangles blend the perfect polarity of energies. It's frequencies resonate to beauty, luck, love, health and things "by chance". This is great for meditation. To burn candles with this layout is good for linking the mental plane with the heart chakra. It protects and balances. Burning candles in this layout will enhance your own divine aspects and qualities. 7 Pointed Star This is the one configuration that affects all the main chakras if one side directly in the middle. It will balances and align most energies. It is the cycle of completeness. It is security, safety, rest, and peace. Seven is a reoccurring theme through most ritual practices. Seven is a high spiritual number and is also repeated throughout all scriptures. There are seven knots of 'spellbinding'. The sevenfold principle. There are seven zones of earth and of heaven. The Tree of Life has seven branches and seven leaves upon those branches. As you can see the seven is a highly spiritual number. Use it in candle burning with the most high of intentions. It is the best to use for the 'healing' energies. Candle Color Chart Example of a Candle Burning Session Here, I will set an example of a standard candle burning session. First, I recommend a short meditation session, just to clear your energies and help you focus. This is a very good practice, especially, if you have had a very draining day, and have come in contact with many negative energies. Just using public transportation home would be enough of a reason to cleanse first before you enter the circles of Light and Energy. Can you imagine the effect if you brought all that conflicting negativity with you in the configuration? Let's say you want to bring money to you. You need money. Next, you will choose the appropriate color. You could choose, Gold, Green or Brown. One has to decide the nature of their money needs. Brown is usually for financial crisis, where Gold is more for quick money and improving financial flow. Green is more for vast wealth. In this case some quick money might do, so I would choose Gold. Next I would set up for the Triangle layout of candles. See the diagrams. At this point one "dresses" the candle buy cleansing them with a white all cotton cloth. Taking care to rub in one direction only so there is no conflicting of energies. Rubbing in one direction "tags" the frequencies and help excite the atoms and molecules. Sit in the middle of the triangle. Holding the candles in your hand say some blessing or spiritual affirmation such as, "Oh Universe or Oh Lord, bless these candles." "Give bounty to my request if all is in balance as I ask it." The reason we ask this way is that sometimes we 'think' we know what we want or need - this may or not be true. We see only a small portion of the larger workings of Universe. Sometimes we are not always aware of the deeper reasons why things are going on in our lives or around us. As such we may be in direct conflict of what should be happening, and is supposed to be happening. This is why we petition but leave it as, I would like this or that, or "if it is in my best interest". Trust the Universe to know if it fits in with what is supposed to be going on. We also want to ask in a way that ensures that no others will be harmed or lessened by our request. Then we must take care to be very thorough. Yes, there is a reason to be very thorough. In asking for something, you may know what you mean, but if you do not state HOW then Universe will supply it by the shortest means possible. Energy follows the path of least resistanceÉ.This means that it will find an opening any place where there is one. As the creators and orchestra conductor it is up to us to manage our experiences with the utmost of responsibility. It is said that Universe will help once we have exhausted our part in availability. Here is an example of what I mean. Say you ask for some money without the stipulation, of just how. Now, Universe hears this request and primes all energies. In the next three days you fell in the grocery store. You injured yourself. You received a check from their insurance for $1200.00. Well, yes, you got your money, but at what cost? I once asked for a new car. I was tired of the one I had. I asked just in that manner. "Oh, I said, Universe bring me a new car." Well, 2 days later Universe brought me a new car. You know how? I got into a car accident and totaled out my car - well, I got what I asked for didnÕt I? But look at what it cost me. My request took the shortest possible path. This episode taught me a very valuable lesson in petitioning. Stipulate thoroughly, as to your intent. Have it come in the most balanced way. Make sure it harms not yourself or others in any way. Begin lighting the candles in a clockwise movement, in sequence. Never out of sequence, that is chaotic energy. With each light of the candle reaffirm the desired object or effect that is wanted. Next, sit, quietly, for 10 or 15 minutes and visualize the object, etc., surrounded in the color candles you are using. Breathe deeply and slowly inside the triangle. After the allowed time is over. Usually, 10 or 15 minutes will be enough time inside the candle layout. Next, you must extinguish the flame of each candle. Never use the breath to extinguish the flame. The breath has its own power and source. It will conflict the desired energies. Use a metal cup or a store bought candle snuffer. Your session is now over. You may, depending on what you are asking for, want to do this for several sessions. I hope you have found this informative and helpful. I wish you much joy and good health. Happy Candle Burning!! Crystal for healing

............................................................................................................. Avalon Crystals Crystal Infomation By Kellie the crystal deva The below information is copyrighted and cannot be copied or used on your website. Study of the chakras ~ Each chakra explained ~ Cleansing crystals ~ programming crystals ~ laying out crystals for healing ~ crystals to use on each chakra ~ crystals and the zodiac ~ reclaim your right to heal STUDY OF THE CHAKRAS The word 'chakra' is derived from the Sanskrit word meaning 'wheel'. If we were able to see the chakras (as many psychics, in fact, do) we would observe a wheel of energy continuously revolving or rotating. Clairvoyants perceive chakras as colorful wheels or flowers with a hub in the center. The chakras begin at the base of the spine and finish over the top of the head. Though fixed in the central spinal column they are located on both the front and back of the body, and work through it. Each chakra vibrates and rotates at different speeds. The root or first chakra rotates at the slowest speed, the crown or seventh chakra at the highest. Each chakra is stimulated by its own and complimentary color, and a range of gemstones for specific uses. The chakra colors are of the rainbow; red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. The size and brightness of the wheels vary with individual development, physical condition, energy levels, disease, or stress. If the chakras are not balanced, or if the energies are blocked, the basic life force will be slowed down. The individual may feel listless, tired, out of sorts, or depressed. Not only will physical bodily functions be affected so diseases may manifest, but the thought processes and the mind may also be affected. A negative attitude, fear, doubt, etc. may preoccupy the individual. A constant balance between the chakras promotes health and a sense of well being. If the chakras are opened to much, a person could literally short circuit themselves with too much universal energy going through the body. If the chakras are closed, this does not allow for the universal energy to flow through them properly which may also lead to dis-ease. Most of us react to unpleasant experiences by blocking our feeling and stopping a great deal of our natural energy flow. This affects the maturation and development of the chakras. Whenever a person blocks whatever experience he is having, he in turn blocks his chakras, which eventually become disfigured. When the chakras are functioning normally, each will be 'open', spinning clockwise to metabolize the particular energies needed from the universal energy field. As already mentioned any 'imbalances' that exist within any chakra may have profound effects upon either our physical or emotional bodies. We are able to use our quartz crystals and gemstones to re-balance all our chakric centers and once the chakra has been properly balanced then our body will gradually return to normal. The reason why crystals and gemstones are wonderful and powerful healing tools are because of what science calls its piezoelectric effect. (You can see this effect in the modern quartz watches). Crystals and gemstones respond to the electricity that is coursing through our body, and if the energy is sluggish, the constant electrical vibrations of the stones will help to harmonize, balance, and stimulate these energies. top THE SEVEN MAJOR CHAKRAS FIRST CHAKRA-ROOT Studying the individual chakras begins with the root chakra, called Muladhara in Sanskrit. The root chakra is located at the base of the spine at the tailbone in back, and the pubic bone in front. This center holds the basic needs for survival, security and safety. The root chakra is powerfully related to our contact with the Earth Mother, providing us with the ability to be grounded into the earthplane. This is also the center of manifestation. When you are trying to make things happen in the material world, business or material possessions, the energy to succeed will come from the first chakra. If this chakra is blocked an individual may feel fearful, anxious, insecure and frustrated. Problems like obesity, anorexia nervosa, and knee troubles can occur. Root body parts include the hips, legs, lower back and sexual organs. The colors used for this chakra are red, brown and black. The gemstones are Garnet, Smoky Quartz, Obsidian, and Black Tourmaline. NOTE: A man's sexual organs are located primarily in his first chakra, so male sexual energy is usually experienced primarily as physical. A women's sexual organs are located primarily in her second chakra, so female sexual energy is usually experienced primarily as emotional. Both chakras are associated with sexual energy. SECOND CHAKRA-BELLY (SACRAL) The next chakra or second chakra is often referred to as the belly or (sacral). It is located two inches below the navel and is rooted into the spine. This center holds the basic needs for sexuality, creativity, intuition, and self-worth. This chakra is also about friendliness, creativity, and emotions. It governs peoples sense of self-worth, their confidence in their own creativity, and their ability to relate to others in an open and friendly way. It's influenced by how emotions were expressed or repressed in the family during childhood. Proper balance in this chakra means the ability to flow with emotions freely and to feel and reach out to others sexually or not. If this chakra is blocked a person may feel emotionally explosive, manipulative, obsessed with thoughts of sex or may lack energy. Physical problems may include, kidney weakness, stiff lower back, constipation, and muscle spasms. Belly body parts include sexual organs (women), kidneys, bladder, and large intestine. The main color used with this chakra is orange. The gemstones are Carnelian Agate, Orange Calcite and Tigers Eye. THIRD CHAKRA-SOLAR PLEXUS The third chakra is referred to as the Solar Plexus. It is located two inches below the breastbone in the center behind the stomach. The third chakra is the center of personal power, the place of ego , of passions, impulses, anger and strength. It is also the center for astral travel and astral influences, receptivity of spirit guides and for psychic development. When the Third Chakra is out of balance you may lack confidence, be confused, worry about what others think, feel that others are controlling your life, and may be depressed. Physical problems may include digestive difficulties, liver problems, diabetes, nervous exhaustion, and food allergies. When balanced you may feel cheerful, outgoing, have self-respect, expressive, enjoy taking on new challenges, and have a strong sense of personal power. The body parts for this chakra include the stomach, liver, gall bladder, pancreas, and small intestine. The main color for this chakra is yellow. The gemstones are Citrine, Topaz, and Yellow Calcite. FOURTH CHAKRA- HEART The fourth chakra is referred to as the heart chakra. It is located behind the breast bone in front and on the spine between the shoulder blades in back. This is the center for love, compassion and spirituality. This center directs one's ability to love themselves and others, to give and to receive love. This is also the chakra connecting body and mind with spirit. Almost everyone today has a hard, hurt, or broken heart, and it is no accident that heart disease is the number one killer in America today. Deep heart hurts can result in aura obstructions called heart scars. When these scars are released, they raise a lot of old pain, but free the heart for healing and new growth. When this chakra is out of balance you may feel sorry for yourself, paranoid, indecisive, afraid of letting go, afraid of getting hurt, or unworthy of love. Physical illnesses include heart attack, high blood pressure, insomnia, and difficult in breathing. When this chakra is balanced you may feel compassionate, friendly, empathetic, desire to nurture others and see the good in everyone. Body parts for the fourth chakra include heart, lungs, circulatory system, shoulders, and upper back. The main colors used are pink and green. The gemstones are Rose Quartz, Kunzite, and Watermelon tourmaline. FIFTH CHAKRA-THROAT The fifth chakra is referred to as the Throat. It is located in the V of the collarbone at the lower neck and is the center of communication, sound, and expression of creativity via thought , speech, and writing. The possibility for change, transformation and healing are located here. The throat is where anger is stored and finally let go of. When this chakra is out of balance you may want to hold back, feel timid, be quiet, feel weak, or can't express your thoughts. Physical illnesses or ailments include, hyperthyroid, skin irritations, ear infections, sore throat, inflammations, and back pain. When this chakra is balanced you may feel balanced, centered, musically or artistically inspired, and may be a good speaker. Body parts for the fifth chakra are throat, neck, teeth, ears, and thyroid gland. The main color used is light blue. The gemstones are Aquamarine and Azurite. SIXTH CHAKRA- THIRD EYE The sixth chakra is referred to as the Third Eye. It is located above the physical eyes on the center of the forehead. This is the center for psychic ability, higher intuition, the energies of spirit and light. It also assists in the purification of negative tendencies and in the elimination of selfish attitudes. Through the power of the sixth chakra, you can receive guidance, channel, and tune into your Higher Self. When this chakra is not balanced you may feel non-assertive, afraid of success, or go the opposite way and be egotistical. Physical symptoms may include headaches, blurred vision, blindness, and eyestrain. When this chakra is balanced and open you are your own master with no fear of death, are not attached to material things, may experience telepathy, astral travel, and past lives. Sixth chakra body parts include the eyes, face, brain, lymphatic and endocrine system. The main colors are purple and dark blue. The gemstones are Amethyst, Sodalite, and Lapis Lazuli. SEVENTH CHAKRA-THE CROWN The seventh chakra is referred to as the Crown. It is located just behind the top of the skull. It is the center of spirituality, enlightenment, dynamic thought and energy. It allows for the inward flow of wisdom, and brings the gift of cosmic consciousness. This is also the center of connectedness with the Goddess (God), the place where life animates the physical body. The silver cord that connects the aura bodies extends from the crown. The soul comes into the body through the crown at birth and leaves from the crown at death. When this chakra is unbalanced there may be a constant sense of frustration, no spark of joy, and destructive feelings. Illnesses may include migraine headaches and depression. Balanced energy in this chakra may include the ability to open up to the Divine and total access to the unconscious and subconscious. The main colors for the crown are white and purple. The gemstones are Clear Quartz Crystal, Oregon Opal, and Amethyst. THE EIGHTH CHAKRA-THE TRANSPERSONAL POINT is located several inches above the center of the head is the Transpersonal point. Place a hand there and a tingling sensation in the palm identifies the center. Its color is clear and is activated by selenite or zircon. Through the Transpersonal point the soul is manifested into matter, it carries the individual’s reasons to incarnate into this lifetime. Other names for this center include "Soul Star" and "Heavenly Chi". top CLEARING GEMSTONES AND CRYSTALS Sometimes a stone or crystal you are strongly drawn to doesn't feel good, or a stone that felt good previously doesn't feel good now. The stone or crystal may need to be cleared. Clearing is necessary before using any stone for healing. The clearer the energy of a healing stone, the more powerful it is. Crystals and healing gemstones need to be cleared as soon as they are purchased as well as clearing after every healing. A cleared, ready crystal feels positive and bright, tingly and cold to the touch. A crystal that needs clearing may feel hot, heavy or drained. There are a number of ways to effectively clear crystals and gemstones. 1. SMUDGING- A quick way to cleanse your healing stones is to smudge them with burning cedar or sage. Smudging is an excellent way to make sure your stones are purified. Simply hold the burning sage or cedar stick while passing your stone through the smoke. I usually do this a couple times to ensure cleansing. I also like to cleanse my stones by smudging after every healing. 2. MOONLIGHT- Moonlight is another way of clearing your gemstones. Simply place outside from the Full to the New Moon. Waning Moons are good times to clear crystals, to dispel old energies, but any time works. The amount of time used varies with the sensitivity of the healer and the amount of material from which the stone needs cleansing. Try hanging your gemstone necklaces in a tree where the moonlight can cleanse them. (I personally do not recommend ever placing your crystals and gemstones in the sunlight, many stones tend to fade their colors in the sun. Also internal fractures may cause your stone to crack or break if placed in the sun.) 3. OTHER METHODS THAT WORK WELL- Burying your crystal in a cupful of dried herbs will also clear it. Suggested herbs for this are rose petals, sage, frankincense, myrrh, and sandalwood. You can usually find these at low cost at many co-ops or herb stores. This is a gentle way to clear crystals, and a pleasant way, but it does take longer than sea salt. Crystals may also be buried into the Earth. This is especially helpful when you feel deep cleansing is needed. Outdoors, simply dig a hole the size of your crystal into the Earth, place your crystal again point down, and cover with soil. The amount of time needed is personal choice. Be sure to place a Popsicle stick or some other marker to insure you fine your stone again!!! For apartment dwellers, use a flower pot to bury your stone in. The Sacred Breath- Some like to use this method of 'blowing away' any negativity from the stone, simply hold the stone in your hand and blow on it, while blowing ask your higher self to cleanse the crystal. Finally, if you are in a hurry and feel that your crystal needs to be cleared, you can easily run them under cool tap water. Make sure the points are facing down the drain to run the negative energy right down the sink!!! NEVER USE WARM OR HOT WATER, THIS WILL FRACTURE OR BREAK YOUR CRYSTALS. Visualize the crystal as sparkly, tingly, cold, and belonging to the healer. I also feel it is good to energetically smudge my client before starting the 'laying on of stones' process. top PROGRAMMING AND DEDICATING STONES After you choose and clear your gemstone or crystal, it is a good idea to dedicate it or program it. The purpose of programming a crystal or gemstone is to focus its abilities on something you specifically need, thereby magnifying the stone's intent through your own. The purpose of dedicating the stone to a high level healing energy or Goddess (God) is to protect it from negative energy. A crystal or stone that is programmed and dedicated in these ways becomes much more powerful and useful as a tool. This is a very simple process. Hold the crystal or gemstone in your hand and sense its energy. With the stone being newly cleared, the energy will feel stronger and even more appealing that before. As you sense this energy and appreciate it, ask quietly to be connected to the deva of the crystal or gemstone. Though not animate, stones are living things and the deva of the piece is the stone's life-force energy. Once you feel you have sensed what you can from the energy, think of what you will be using the stone for. Think of these uses, then quietly ask the gemstone if it is willing to act in the way you wish. The crystals energy may increase with a yes or seem to disappear with a no. If the stone accepts your intent, state in your mind that it be so. Once a stone is programmed, it will hold its intent until you or someone else reprograms it. To prevent any negative energy from attaching itself to your crystal you may with to dedicate it. To do this, simply hold the crystal or gemstone in your hand and state clearly in your mind: "Only the most positive high-level energy may work through this healing tool". Focus on your intent for awhile, then end your sensing (meditation) with "SO BE IT". The stone is now dedicated. You may also choose to dedicate your gemstone or crystal to a specific healing energy, for example, to a Goddess of healing. There are many healing goddesses, including Isis, Yemaya, Diana, and White Buffalo Calf Woman. For stones programmed for protection, Hecate or Kali are strong protection Goddesses. top LAYING ON OF STONES The technique of using crystals and gemstones on the receiver's body for healing is called laying on of stones. It is a powerful method of cleansing negative energy, clearing and balancing the chakras, effecting emotional release, and bringing light and healing into all the aura bodies. Cleared, programmed, and dedicated stones move the receiver's vibration into alignment with the planet and the universal grid. This results in a freeing of life force energy in the chakras and aura, a healing of the Body of Light, and a transformation of negative or dis-ease into health. The process may be done with clear quartz crystals only, colored gemstones only, or a combination of both. The stones may be used alone or with a hands on healing (ie;Reiki). The stones are placed upon the receiver's body from feet to head. The healer then begins using her hands as usual starting at the head and moving toward the feet. (Use gemstones with colors matching each chakra's color. The stones can be in any form—faceted, raw, tumbled, eggs, or beads.) Energy in this type of healing needs to move in one direction through the body, either Earth to sky or sky to Earth. If the energy is Earth to sky, all the gemstones that have points are placed with the points turned towards the receiver's crown. The effect of this direction is to move the receiver's energy to a higher vibration or more spiritual level. If the direction is from sky to Earth, it is the opposite, with the crystals pointing toward the feet. This direction moves life force energy from crown to feet for grounding and rooting into Earth. To begin, the receiver lies on her back on a padded floor or massage table, with pillows under her head and knees for comfort. The space should be quiet, comfortable, and warm. Use only stones that have been dedicated to positive energy and programmed for healing. Invite spirit guides and angels into the session if you wish. Start by placing a clear quartz crystal above her head and below her feet. In the right hand place another crystal and in the left hand place a rose quartz gemstone. (my personal method). Then go chakra by chakra, moving from the feet to crown and placing the appropriate colored gemstone for each center. (Be sure you have your healing stones spread out where you can reach them easily.) There may be stones that you are drawn to for a particular reason, let yourself be guided, there are no real rules. You cannot do it wrong. A stone that is not needed for the session or is inappropriate for the receiver's energy will roll right off or roll to another place where it is better utilized. Allow this to occur. If the receiver feels uncomfortable with a particular stone, remove it, the energy is not right for her needs. When the stones are all in place, the healer has two options. She (he) can go to the head and begin a hands on healing. Be sure to cover the stones with your hands carefully in order not to scatter the gemstones. While your hands are covering each chakra over the stone, visualize the bright color of the gemstone entering the chakra, making it appear bright, balanced, centered, and healthy. Do this visualization until you feel confident to move to the next chakra. Be sure to flick fingers to release any negative energy before going to the next center. End with a complete brushing of the aura. The other option a healer has once the stones are placed is to sit beside the receiver and simply wait, allowing the gemstones and spirit guides to do the healing. As the receiver's chakras and aura absorb and are balanced by the crystal and gem energies, the stones begin to roll off one by one. When all the stones are off, or the receiver feels finished with those that remain, the healing is over. End with a complete brushing of the aura and allow the receiver to lie quietly without the stones. Ask for feedback and discuss anything that you feel should be discussed. While she is doing this, the healer can gather up the stones from the table or floor and clear them again before putting them away. Put them into your protective box. A laying on of stones healing can be quite intense. There is often a major energy shift during this type of healing. More frequent emotional releases, past life and this life trauma openings and other transformative events. The healers role in this is to wait for the release to end and to be entirely non-judgmental. After a session, there may also be a physical detoxification process that can continue for up to a week. Be aware of what is happening and again, allow it. The changes are always positive and are usually gentle. top TABLE OF CHAKRAS AND GEMSTONES FIRST CHAKRA----Red red Garnet smoky quartz black obsidian SECOND CHAKRA---Orange carnelian orange calcite tiger's eye THIRD CHAKRA---Yellow citrine topaz golden calcite FOURTH CHAKRA---Pink and Green rose quartz kunzite watermelon tourmaline jade adventurine FIFTH CHAKRA---Light Blue aquamarine azurite sodalite SIXTH CHAKRA---Blue or Indigo lapis blue fluorite sugilite clear quartz SEVENTH CHAKRA---Violet or Clear amethyst Oregon opal clear quartz top GEMSTONES OF THE ZODIAC Aries Scorpio (3/21-4/20---Bloodstone (10/23-11/22)--Aquamarine Taurus Sagittarius (4/21-5/20)---Sapphire (11/23-12/21)--Topaz Gemini Capricorn (5/21-6/20)---Agate (12/22-1/20)--Ruby Cancer Aquarius (6/21-7/20)---Emerald (1/21-2/18)--Garnet Leo Pisces (7/12-8/22)---Onyx (2/19-3/20)--Amethyst Virgo (8/23-9/22)---Carnelian Libra (9/23-10-22)---Peridot top RECLAIM YOUR RIGHT TO HEAL A final thought…the ancient healers knew that the body is more than what is seen. They respected the wholeness of the body, emotions, mind, and spirit, saw the goddess (god) within all Being, and treated their patients with respect and caring. Healing was a three way agreement between healer, goddess (god) and the person being healed, and healing was an active choice. Such partnerships and participation are missing in today's modern medicine, along with the concepts of wholeness and respect. Anyone can heal, and anyone can choose well-being. By learning and using the ancient skills of healing, many diseases of the body, emotions, mind, and spirit are preventable, or are easily transformed before they become matters for the allopathic medicine. The skills of the ancient healers are available, powerful and very much alive right now. Please use these tools, it is our right!!! The noble of Buddhism

(1) Diagnosis of an illness; (2) Prognosis; (3) Recovery; and (4) Medicine to cure the disease. The first 2 truths deal with the way things are; the last 2 point the way to freedom from suffering. 1. The Noble Truth of Suffering Besides “suffering,” other translations of the Pali word dukkha include unsatisfactoriness, dis-ease, and instability. All these words point to the fact that no conditioned phenomenon can provide true (lasting) happiness in our lives. The first step in a spiritual life is to look very closely and honestly at our experience of life and see that there is suffering. We tend to overlook or ignore or just blindly react to the unpleasant, so it continually haunts us. Yet although physical suffering is a natural aspect of our lives, we can learn to transcend mental suffering. 2. The Noble Truth of the Cause of Suffering Through a lack of understanding of how things truely exist, we create and recreate an independent self entity called “me.” The whole of our experience in life can be viewed through this sense of self. In consequence, various cravings govern our actions. Cravings arise for sense experiences, for “being” or “becoming” (e.g. rich, famous, loved, respected, immortal), and to avoid the unpleasant. These cravings are the root cause of suffering. 3. The Noble Truth of the Cessation of Suffering The mind can be purified of all the mental defilements that cause suffering. Nibbana, the ultimate peace, has been compared to the extinction of a three-fold fire of lust, ill-will, and delusion. One who has realised cessation has great purity of heart, ocean-like compassion, and penetrating wisdom. 4. The Noble Truth of the Way to the Cessation of Suffering The Way leading to cessation contains a thorough and profound training of body, speech, and mind. Traditionally it’s outlined as the Noble Eightfold Path: (1) Right Understanding; (2) Right Intention; (3) Right Speech; (4) Right Action; (5) Right Livelihood; (6) Right Effort; (7) Right Mindfulness; and (8) Right Concentration. On the level of morality (sila), the Path entails restraint and care in speech, action, and livelihood. The concentration (samadhi) level requires constant effort to abandon the unwholesome and develop the wholesome, to increase mindfulness and clear comprehension of the mind-body process, and to develop mental calm and stability. The wisdom (panna) level entails the abandonment of thoughts of sensuality, ill will, and cruelty; ultimately it penetrates the true nature of phenomena to see impermanence, unsatisfactoriness, and impersonality. When all 8 factors of the Path come together in harmony to the point of maturity, suffering is transcended. In summary, the Four Noble Truths can be thought of as that which is to be (1) comprehended, (2) abandoned, (3) realized, and (4) developed. Today's Most Read Articles ☟

http://news.insing.com/tabloid/china-executes-killer-of-pregnant-ghost-bride/id-51783f00 .............................................................................................. Wang Hairong murdered a pregnant woman and sold the body to a family as a bride for their dead son in a "ghost marriage". Photo for illustration purposes only (Photo: Bridal Gowns for Sale Facebook page) (BEIJING) A man who murdered a pregnant woman in China to sell her corpse as a "ghost bride" has been executed, state media reported Thursday. Wang Hairong was put to death earlier this week, the Legal Daily said citing a court in Yan'an in the northern province of Shaanxi. Wang and two accomplices persuaded a woman, identified only by her surname Luo, to accept a lift in their car in May 2011 and strangled her, the report said. She was pregnant at the time. They drove to a nearby town and sold Luo's body for 22,000 yuan (S$4,500) to a family as a bride for their dead son in a "ghost marriage", it said. Wang took 14,000 yuan, with the rest of the money divided between the other two, it added. Marriage is an important part of Chinese society. While the practice is increasingly rare, "ghost" weddings are still carried out by some families in parts of Shaanxi and neighbouring Shanxi. If a young adult son dies before having had a chance to marry, he will be buried next to a woman after a wedding ceremony of sorts, to prevent the man's spirit being lonely in the afterlife and bringing misfortune on his family. In March, Chinese media reported that four people had been jailed for digging up corpses to sell as ghost brides.

The law of karma

The Law of Karma May 10, 2013 Buddhism by Dr. Peter Della Santina. We have come to a couple of related ideas which are common in Buddhism and they are the ideas of karma and rebirth. These ideas are closely inter-related, but because the subject is a fairly wide one, we will begin to deal with the idea of karma todayand rebirth in another lecture. We know that what binds us in samsara are the defilements — desire, ill-will and ignorance. We spoke about this when we talked about the Second Noble Truth — the truth of the cause of suffering. These defilements are something which every living being in samsara shares, whether we speak of human beings or animals or beings who live in the other realms which we do not normally perceive. In this, all living beings are alike and yet amongst all the living beings that we can normally perceive, there are many differences. For instance, some of us are wealthy, some are less wealthy, some are strong and healthy, others are disabled and so forth. There are many differences amongst living beings and even more so there are differences between animals and human beings. These differences are due to karma. What we all share – desire, ill-will and ignorance – are common to all living beings, but the particular condition in which we find ourselves is the result of our particular karma that conditions the situation in which we find ourselves, the situation in which we may be wealthy, strong and so forth. These circumstances are decided by karma. It is in this sense that karma explains the differences amongst living beings. It explains why some beings are fortunate while others are less fortunate, some are happy while others are less happy. The Buddha has specifically stated that karma explains the differences between living beings. You might also recall that the understanding of how karma affects the birth of living beings in happy or unhappy circumstances — the knowledge of how living beings move from happy circumstances to unhappy circumstances, and vice versa, from unhappy to happy circumstances as a result of their karma – was part of the Buddha’s experience on the night of His enlightenment. It is karma that explains the circumstances that living beings find themselves in. Having said this much about the function of karma, let us look more closely at what karma is. Let us define karma. Maybe we can define karma best by first deciding what karma is not. It is quite often the case that we find people misunderstanding the idea of karma. This is particularly true in our daily casual use of the term. We find people saying that one cannot change one’s situation because of one’s karma. In this sense, karma becomes a sort of escape. It becomes similar to predestination or fatalism. This is emphatically not the correct understanding of karma. It is possible that this misunderstanding of karma has come about because of the popular idea that we have about luck and fate. It may be for this reason that our idea of karma has become overlaid in popular thought with the notion of predestination. Karma is not fate or predestination. If karma is not fate or predestination, then what is it? Let us look at the term itself. Karma means action, means “to do”. Immediately we have an indication that the real meaning of karma is not fate because karma is action. It is dynamic. But it is more than simply action because it is not mechanical action. It is not unconscious or involuntary action. It is intentional, conscious, deliberate, willful action. How is it that this intentional, will action conditions or determines our situation? It is because every action must have a reaction, an effect. This truth has been expressed in regard to the physical universe by the great physicist Newton who formulated the law which states that every action must have an equal and opposite reaction. In the moral sphere of conscious actions, we have a counterpart to the physical law of action and reaction, the law that every intentional, will action must have its effect. This is why we sometimes speak either of Karma-Vipaka, intentional action and its ripened effect, or we speak of Karma-Phala, intentional action and its fruit. It is when we speak of intentional action together with its effect or fruit that we speak of the Law of Karma. In its most basic sense, the Law of Karma in the moral sphere teaches that similar actions will lead to similar results. Let us take an example. If we plant a mango seed, the plant that springs up will be a mango tree, and eventually it will bear a mango fruit. Alternatively, if we plant a Pong Pong seed, the tree that will spring up will be a Pong Pong tree and the fruit a Pong Pong. As one sows, so shall one reap. According to one’s action, so shall be the fruit. Similarly, in the Law of Karma, if we do a wholesome action, eventually we will get a wholesome fruit, and if we do an unwholesome action eventually we will get an unwholesome, painful result. This is what we mean when we say that causes bring about effects that are similar to the causes. This we will see very clearly when we come to specific examples of wholesome and unwholesome actions. We can understand by means of this general introduction that karma can be of two varieties – wholesome karma or good karma and unwholesome karma or bad karma. In order that we should not misunderstand this description of karma, it is useful for us to look at the original term. In this case, it is kushala or akushala karma, karma that is wholesome or unwholesome. In order that we understand how these terms are being used, it is important that we know the real meaning of kushala and akushala. Kushala means intelligent or skilful, whereas akushala means not intelligent, not skilful. This helps us to understand how these terms are being used, not in terms of good and evil but in terms of skilful and unskilful, in terms of intelligent and unintelligent, in terms of wholesome and unwholesome. Now how wholesome and how unwholesome? Wholesome in the sense that those actions which are beneficial to oneself and others, those actions that spring not out of desire, ill-will and ignorance, but out of renunciation, loving-kindness and compassion, and wisdom. One may ask how does one know whether an action that is wholesome or unwholesome will produce happiness or unhappiness. The answer is time will tell. The Buddha Himself answered the question. He has explained that so long as an unwholesome action does not bear its fruit of suffering, for so long a foolish person will consider that action good. But when that unwholesome action bears its fruit of suffering then he will realize that the action is unwholesome. Similarly, so long as a wholesome action does not bear its fruit of happiness, a good person may consider that action unwholesome. When it bears its fruit of happiness, then he will realize that the action is good. So one needs to judge wholesome and unwholesome action from the point of view of long-term effect. Very simply, wholesome actions result in eventual happiness for oneself and others, while unwholesome actions have the opposite result, they result in suffering for oneself and others. Specifically, the unwholesome actions which are to be avoided relate to the three doors or means of action, and these are body, speech and mind. There are three unwholesome actions of the body, four of speech and three of mind that are to be avoided. The three unwholesome actions of body that are to be avoided are killing, stealing and sexual misconduct. The four unwholesome actions of speech that are to be avoided are lying, slander, harsh speech and malicious gossip. The three unwholesome actions of mind that are to be avoided are greed, anger and delusion. By avoiding these ten unwholesome actions we will avoid their consequences. The unwholesome actions have suffering as their fruit. The fruit of these unwholesome actions can take various forms. The fully ripened fruit of the unwholesome actions consists of rebirth in the lower realms, in the realms of suffering — hell, hungry ghosts and animals. If these unwholesome actions are not sufficient to result in rebirth in these lower realms, they will result in unhappiness in this life as a human being. Here we can see at work the principle of a cause resulting in a similar effect. For example, habitual killing which is motivated by ill-will and anger and which results in the taking of the life of other beings will result in rebirth in the hells where one’s experience is saturated by anger and ill-will and where one may be repeatedly killed. If killing is not sufficiently habitual or weighty to result in rebirth in the hells, killing will result in shortened life as a human being, separation from loved ones, fear or paranoia. Here too we can see how the effect is similar to the cause. Killing shortens the life of others, deprives others of their loved ones and so forth, and so if we kill we will be liable to experience these effects. Similarly, stealing which is borne of the defilement of desire may lead to rebirth as a hungry ghost where one is totally destitute of desired objects. If it does not result in rebirth as a ghost, it will result in poverty, dependence upon others for one’s livelihood and so forth. Sexual misconduct results in martial distress or unhappy marriages. While unwholesome actions produce unwholesome results – suffering, wholesome actions produce wholesome results – happiness. One can interpret wholesome actions in two ways. One can simply regard wholesome actions as avoiding the unwholesome actions, avoiding killing, stealing, sexual misconduct and the rest. Or one can speak of wholesome actions in positive terms. Here one can refer to the list of wholesome actions that includes generosity, good conduct, meditation, reverence, service, transference of merits, rejoicing in the merit of others, hearing the Dharma, teaching the Dharma and straightening of one’s own views. Just as unwholesome actions produce suffering, these wholesome actions produce benefits. Again effects here are similar to the actions. For example, generosity results in wealth. Hearing of the Dharma results in wisdom. The wholesome actions have as their consequences similar wholesome effects just as unwholesome actions have similar unwholesome effects. Karma, be it wholesome or unwholesome, is modified by the conditions under which the actions are performed. In other words, a wholesome or unwholesome action may be more or less strong depending upon the conditions under which it is done. The conditions which determine the weight or strength of karma may be divided into those which refer to the subject — the doer of the action — and those which refer to the object — the being to whom the action is done. So the conditions that determine the weight of karma apply to the subject and object of the action. Specifically, if we take the example of killing, in order for the act of killing to have its complete and unmitigated power, five conditions must be present — a living being, the awareness of the existence of a living being, the intention to kill the living being, the effort or action of killing the living being, and the consequent death of the living being. Here too, we can see the subjective and the objective conditions. The subjective conditions are the awareness of the living being, the intention to kill and the action of killing. The objective conditions are the presence of the living being and the consequent death of the living being. Similarly, there are five conditions that modify the weight of karma and they are persistent, repeated action; action done with great intention and determination; action done without regret; action done towards those who possess extraordinary qualities; and action done towards those who have benefited one in the past. Here too there are subjective and objective conditions. The subjective conditions are persistent action; action done with intention; and action done without regret. If one does an unwholesome action again and again with great intention and without regret, the weight of the action will be enhanced. The objective conditions are the quality of the object to whom actions are done and the nature of the relationship. In other words, if one does a wholesome or unwholesome action towards living beings who possess extraordinary qualities such as the arhats, or the Buddha, the wholesome or unwholesome action done will have greater weight. Finally the power of wholesome or unwholesome action done towards those who have benefited one in the past, such as one’s parents, teachers and friends, will be greater. The objective and subjective conditions together determine the weight of karma. This is important because understanding this will help us to understand that karma is not simply a matter of black and white, or good and bad. Karma is moral action and moral responsibility. But the working of the Law of Karma is very finely tuned and balanced so as to match effect with cause, so as to take into account the subjective and objective conditions that determine the nature of an action. This ensures that the effects of actions are equal to and similar to the nature of the causes. The effects of karma may be evident either in the short term or in the long term. Traditionally we divide karma into three varieties related to the amount of time that is required for the effects of these actions to manifest themselves. Karma can either manifest its effects in this very life or in the next life or only after several lives. When karma manifests its effects in this life, we can see the fruit of karma within a relatively short length of time. This variety of karma is easily verifiable by any of us. For instance, when someone refuses to study, when someone indulges in harmful distractions like alcohol and drugs, when someone begins to steal to support his harmful habits; the effects will be evident within a short time. They will be evident in loss of livelihood and friendship, health and so forth. We cannot see the long-term effect of karma, but the Buddha and His prominent disciples who have developed their minds are able to perceive directly the long-term effects. For instance, when Maudgalyayana was beaten to death by bandits, the Buddha was able to tell that this event was the effect of something Maudgalyayana had done in a previous life when he had taken his aged parents to the forest and having beaten them to death, had then reported that they had been killed by bandits. The effect of this unwholesome action done many lives before was manifested only in his last life. At death we have to leave everything behind — our property and our loved ones, but our karma will accompany us like a shadow. The Buddha has said that nowhere on earth or in heaven can one escape one’s karma. So when the conditions are correct, dependent upon mind and body, the effects of karma will manifest themselves just as dependent on certain conditions a mango will appear on a mango tree. We can see that even in the world of nature certain effects take longer to appear than others. If for instance, we plant the seed of a papaya, we will obtain the fruit in shorter period than if we plant the seed of a durian. Similarly, the effects of karma manifest either in the short term or in the long term. Besides the two varieties of karma, wholesome and unwholesome karma, we should mention neutral or ineffective karma. Neutral karma is karma that has no moral consequence either because the very nature of the action is such as to have no moral consequence or because it is done involuntarily and unintentionally. For example, sleeping, walking, breathing, eating, handicraft and so forth in themselves have no moral consequence. Similarly, unintentional action is ineffective karma. In other words, if one accidentally steps on an insect, being unconscious of its existence, this also constitutes neutral karma because there is no intention – the intentional element is not there. The benefits of understanding the Law of Karma are that this understanding discourages one from performing unwholesome actions which have suffering as their fruit. Once we understand that in our own life every action will have a similar and equal reaction, once we understand that we will experience the effect of that action, wholesome or unwholesome, we will refrain from unwholesome behavior, not wanting to experience the effects of these unwholesome actions. And similarly, understanding that wholesome actions have happiness as their fruit, we will cultivate these wholesome actions. Reflecting on the Law of Karma, of action and reaction in the moral sphere encourages us to renounce unwholesome actions and cultivate wholesome actions. We will look more closely at the specific effects of karma in future lives and how karma conditions and determines the nature of rebirth in our lecture next week.
