No shark's fin for NTUC FairPrice supermarket

NTUC FairPrice to pull shark's fin off shelves AsiaOne | Thu, Jan 05, 2012 SINGAPORE - Singapore's largest supermarket chain NTUC FairPrice announced today that it will cease selling shark's fin starting April. FairPrice chief executive Seah Kian Peng told The Straits Times that they aim to stop selling shark's fin products by the first quarter of this year, and this will be applicable to all its retail stores, including FairPrice Finest, FairPrice Xpress located at petrol stations, as well as its online store. Mr Seah added that they are committed to be socially responsible retailers and have decided to stop selling shark's fin after much consideration. One of NTUC FairPrice's shark's fin suppliers, Thern Da Seafood, posted a comment on Facebook that drew much criticism earlier this week. The post, which announced the launch of a shark's fin product at the supermarket chain, also said 'Screw the divers', causing netizens to react strongly. Many called for a boycott of both the supplier and FairPrice. Some called for FairPrice to be socially responsible and stop selling shark's fin. In response to that, Mr Seah told The Straits Times that there will be no more shark's fin products sold in FairPrice by the first quarter of this year. He added that they will also be withdrawing all products from Thern Da Seafood. vtay@sph.com.sg
