Fri, Sep 02, 2011 | AsiaOne
A 37-year-old Chinese national was found dead in a Sengkang flat on Wednesday.

Police have arrested her husband, a 32-year-old Singaporean.

The victim, Ms Tang Shifang had become a Singapore citizen, and the couple moved into the unit last November.

The police said they received a call for help around 4pm at Blk 441B Fernvale Road.

They found the woman lying motionless inside the flat and she was pronounced dead by the paramedic at the scene.

A report in The New Paper said her body was covered in bruises.

Neighbours said the woman worked as an assistant at a nearby coffeeshop, and her husband was unemployed. She is believed to have two young children who live with her mother-in-law.

Her manager told The Straits Times that the husband called her on Wednesday morning to inform her that his wife was quitting her job unless her salary was doubled. The manager asked to speak to Ms Tang personally because she heard her crying in the background, but was refused.

Another coffeeshop assistant who worked with Ms Tang said Ms Tang once told her she had been renting a room somewhere for about four months because her husband had hit her.

She advised Ms Tang to make a police report about the abuse but she never did.

Neighbours also said the police questioned the husband for almost eight hours before he was arrested.

The case has been classified as murder, and the suspect will be charged in court on September 2.
