Government considering parental care annual leave Mon, Nov 21, 2011 | AsiaOne Singaporeans may now have annual leave days to care for their elderly parents. Health Minister Gan Kim Yong said today that this is among several things being considered by the Ministerial Committee on Ageing to provide more help to caregivers. He was responding to Marine Parade GRC Member of Parliament (MP) Tin Pei Ling's question on whether the Government would consider mandating annual leave for Singaporeans to take care of their elderly parents. "The caregivers' ability to provide care remains important and we know that family support is probably one of the most preferred channels of support we can give to our parents," she said. Mr Gan agreed with Ms Tin on the importance of helping caregivers, saying the Ministerial Committee on Ageing is looking into how the Government can help by "providing some respite" in terms of the services provided to caregivers. More leave days will allow caregivers more time to look after the elderly at home, he said.
